This song was inspired by Breno and the Undergrounded podcast. The themes of the podcast focus on failure, persistence, and artistic drive, which are of course ever present in musical endeavors especially of the extreme metal variety; however in "Lair of the Night Gaunt" I expand on that theme to consider the false dichotomy of success and failure. In the song, the Night Gaunts are the allure of Reputation and Success that in the end are bait for your ego that will entrap you in folly and the misery of self-delusion. You believe that by following the vision of the City of Dreams you will transcend your mundane and pedestrian existence; however that vision is the lure of the Night Gaunts, set out like an angler fish's lamp in the abyss- to follow those ambitions will lead you face to face with your own destruction and worse; to your transmutation into a parasitic Night Gaunt to be buffeted eternally by the tumultuous gales of the void...

Beneath the ivy lies the Gate with the Silver Key
Where the noisesome abyss swirls beyond your mundane dreaming
A perfume breeze, so fair it seems
Exhaling from a black maw, forever swallowing

Through the gate with the silver key
Many travelers have come in their desperate seeking
The distant lands glimpsed in strangest dreams
Half remembered snatches of mumbled poetry
And each must pick their way through the beaks of sharp rock
the crags bared like fangs; needling the sky
And silent the lands- but for the whisper of leathery wings

Glimpse the golden towers and high palisade
The sweeping lines, polished and wide winding ways,
A vision in green and gold
Amongst the deep and fathomless shadow

Still they reach, they crawl, towards that festering void
And the Night Gaunts feed upon the vessel forlorn,
and yet they strive until the vision fades, and the gate, the palisades, give way to the eyeless husk of a shadowed face

The Night Gaunts fly through the tumultuous gales of the void
desert of dreams- and no hopes spring
Eternal the cries
of despair will ring!
